As you can see on the left of my blog, Euro 2008 has progressed, and four of my favorite Euro teams that I listed below (Switzerland, Sweden, Greece, and Poland) failed to qualify for the quarterfinals. I feel bad for them, but at least they can get some comfort by looking at the 2010 World Cup map at the bottom of my blog. European countries have not begun World Cup qualification yet, so they are all still alive for the 2010 World Cup!
I probably won't care too much for Greece or Poland in qualifications, but I will be rooting on my Swiss cousins, without a doubt! They are in Group 2 of qualifying; they will kick off their campaign with a road match against Israel in September. Others in their group are Greece, Moldova, Latvia, and Luxembourg. The top team from the group qualifies for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, while the second-placed nation will go to a playoff against a second-placed team from another group (the winner of that would advance to the World Cup).
Other nations I will be rooting for from Europe include Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Sweden, and maybe Spain (we'll see if they can win me over in Euro 2008).
My favorite team of all is, of course, the United States. They began their World Cup qualification with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Barbados. The two countries duke it out again this weekend, and the only way for the Yanks to be eliminated is for Barbados to win by more than eight goals. Probably won't happen. By the way, if you think you might be Barbadan or think that perhaps maybe one of your ancestors was, go here and maybe you can play for their soccer team. Update (6/23): The United States beat Barbados 1-0 yesterday, winning by a combined 9-0 score over their two games. The Yanks advance to the next round, where they will face home-and-away matches against Cuba, Guatemala, and Trinidad & Tobago. The top two from this group advance to the final phase of World Cup qualifying.
