The main reason I can't root for Spain is because I haven't been able to see them play or see any of the highlights. I have watched highlights of pretty much every other team, but for one reason or another whenever Spain plays, I have a busy day where I can't get to them. Maybe this is divine intervention. I dunno.
Another reason I'll be cheering on Germany today (figuratively speaking, as I will not be watching the game) is because before Euro 2008 began, I tabbed Germany as the winners in my Euro 2008 office pool.
I think the bottom line is that my Swiss ancestors probably spoke German before they came here, and that it is just a bloodline thing. If Spain were playing Macedonia or something, I'd probably root for the Iberian club.
So I apologize if I misled you this entire tournament, but I cannot lie in my heart. I will be rooting for Germany today. Gehen Sie Deutschland!!
Update (6/30): So the Curse of Joe was on full display yesterday. The day of the game, I switch my 'allegiance' from Spain to Germany, and Spain goes on to win 1-0! Unbelievable. At any rate, Spain deserved it. They played a great tournament, and will probably be the favorites heading into the World Cup.
So Spain has qualified for the 2009 Confederations Cup (the map below has been updated). There is one spot left for the Confederations Cup, which will be filled by either New Zealand or New Caledonia.
So I will probably take a break from soccer until the English Premiere League season starts up, when I start following my Fulham Cottagers.
