The Joe Rankings: Week 7

Yet another wild weekend in college football, with The Joe Ranking's #1 team losing at Kentucky in triple-overtime. Also, the Cougars and Utes both played in a couple of semi-lackluster games, but they got their respective jobs done.

Both BYU and Utah were clearly the better teams, but they made boneheaded plays deep in opponents’ territories. For Utah, the fumble by Mack that went out of bounds in the end zone was stupid, and then it seemed like in the first half Brian Johnson bogged down inside the 35. For BYU, Max Hall threw 3 interceptions inside the 35 yard line.

For both teams, the second-half adjustments were huge. Utah decided to give the ball more to Mack, who dominated the game. BYU gave the ball to Harvey Unga, who was unstoppable. And then both teams’ defenses dominated the games throughout. UNLV’s offense wasn’t able to make a significant drive until there were fewer than two minutes left to go, while the Aztecs (which no longer exist as an organized nation) featured their quarterback as their second-leading receiver.

Anyways, BYU is clearly in the driver's seat for the MWC championship. The next three weeks should add to the Cougars' win column, and then they have that brutal stretch of TCU, at Wyoming, and Utah. The Utah game probably concerns me the most as a Cougar fan, because Utah is finally seeing some consistency. But there is a lot of football yet to be played, and as we've seend the past three weeks, anything can happen in college football.
