BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall makes waves when he trots onto the field clad in Nephite armor. "I wanted my actions and appearance to be reflective of the investment that I have made into this program," he states.
Despite this weird occurance, BYU fans are still pumped up as the season begins. Arizona wins the coin toss...and they elect to kick off.
BYU fans go crazy when on the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Max Hall fakes a handoff to Harvey Unga, and launches a perfect deep strike to a wide-open Austin Collie down the sideline. However, Collie pulls a Todd Watkins and trips himself up for some reason at the five-yard line. BYU scores two plays later on a 3-yard pass to a wide open Dennis Pitta in the end zone. The extra point rattles in off the right upright, and BYU has an early 7-0 lead.
Arizona answers right back, though, with their new Texas Tech-style offense. Quarterback Willie Tuitama seems to be right on track, but BYU's Corby Hodgkiss ends the drive with a spectacular interception deep in cougar territory.
BYU chips off six minutes on their next drive with short passes and running plays, eventually finding the end zone when Harvey Unga plows in from four yards out. BYU takes the lead 14-0, and Max Hall is touted by many cougar faithful as an early Heisman candidate.
However, BYU hits a rut from there, and at the half the lead is still 14-0. BYU's defense forces three turnovers in the first half (interceptions by Hodgkiss and Ben Criddle, and a fumble recovery by freshman nose tackle Eathyn Manumaleuna). But the offense isn't able to generate very much more yardage.
Arizona gets on the board to open the second half when they return the kickoff to the 11-yard line, and Tuitama scores on the very first play from scrimmage to make it 14-7. But Max is up to the challenge, completing eight consecutive passes for 78 yards before Fuuuuuuui Vakapuna tumbles in for a touchdown, commencing it with his patented three-second spazz dance.
BYU's defense holds strong all game long. Arizona only threatens once more early in the fourth quarter when they drive inside the cougar five-yard line, but two consecutive sacks by Manumaleuna and David Nixon forces the wildcats to settle for a field goal.
BYU gets on the board once more on a 40-yard touchdown run by Harvey Unga with only three minutes remaining in the game. BYU wins it convincingly.
Final score: BYU 28, Arizona 10.
Player of the game: RB Harvey Unga (12 carries, 112 yards, 2 td)
Surprise performance: NT Eathyn Manumaleuna dominates the game with 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
National Attention: None.
