College Football Notes

1. BYU plays UNLV tomorrow. I am excited to go to this game with my son. This was his Father's Day gift to me. BYU will win 52-17.

2. If the BCS were today, this is what I think it would look like:
National Championship Game: Texas (Big XII champ) v. Alabama (SEC champ)
Rose Bowl: Penn State (Big 10 champ) v. USC (Pac 10 champ)
Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma (Big XII #2) v. Ohio State (Big 10 #2)
Sugar Bowl: Georgia (SEC #2) v. Utah (non-BCS #1)
Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech (ACC champ) v. Pittsburgh (Big East champ)

Georgia fans would probably not be too happy about a second consecutive year playing a non-BCS foe, but at least Utah would be a better foe than Hawaii was last year. Boise State also gets the short end of the stick. They are a non-BCS team in the top 12, which would normally be enough to get a BCS game, but they get trumped by Utah.

Ohio State and Georgia are the two at-large selections. Georgia gets in over Florida and LSU to be the second SEC team in the fold (remember, each conference can only have two teams in BCS games, which is also the reason Oklahoma State and Texas Tech aren't even mentioned from the Big XII right now). The Fiesta chooses Ohio State over Utah and Pittsburgh (the auto qualifiers). I think the Fiesta would also take the Buckeyes over TCU and Boise State (other at-large candidates).

It is possible that the Sugar could take Pittsburgh over Utah if the Panthers continue to win and build momentum. This would push the Utes to the Orange Bowl against the ACC champ.

3. BYU's loss to TCU last week all but ended their BCS hopes this year. But there is still a way for BYU to get in. If the Cougars finish in the top 16 of the BCS standings, they could get automatic qualification into the BCS IF they also finish higher than every other non-BCS team AND higher than the ACC champ and Big East champ.

As such, here is who I am rooting for this week:
BYU over UNLV (obviously)
Wyoming over TCU (not likely)
Eastern Michigan over Ball State (not likely)
Central Florida over Tulsa (not likely)
San Jose State over Boise State (not likely)
Virginia Tech over Florida State
Virginia over Georgia Tech
Louisville over South Florida
Rutgers over Pittsburgh
Texas Tech over Kansas
Texas over Oklahoma State
Colorado over Missouri
Indiana over Northwestern
Purdue over Minnesota
Penn State over Ohio State

There is another way for BYU to get in if they finish in the top 14 along with another Mountain West foe, but the chances of everything working out in this loophole are so astronomical that I don't think it is worth delving into.

The key for the Cougars is just win out, and maybe they'll squeak in.
